Research Alignment Scientist/Engineer at AE Studio

Conduct AI alignment and safety research on under-resourced, high-impact projects in collaboration with leading researchers and organizations.

Mid Posted about 23 hours ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

There are more good alignment ideas than there are people to run them. Top researchers at Anthropic, DeepMind, OpenAI, and the major alignment organizations all have promising directions they can’t get to, ideas that could be more impactful than what’s currently getting funded or what their organizations are set up to try. The window for alignment research is short, and we think the field’s real bottleneck is capacity, not ideas. We’ve built something to fix that.

AE Studio is a 160-person, fully bootstrapped ML consultancy. We’ve spent over a decade building and shipping AI systems for clients including Samsung, Berkshire Hathaway, Goodfire AI, and RAND Corporation. Without outside investors we are able to choose where the money goes, and we put it into alignment research through the AI Alignment Foundation, a nonprofit we founded to scale this work (also backed by other philanthropies). The research team is 25 people and growing.

Over years of client work, we got really good at one thing: taking someone with a vision (an external visionary) and no capacity to build it, putting a strong technical team around them, and shipping fast. Our alignment research is that same approach pointed at the field’s best ideas instead of products. The visionary doesn’t hire anyone, manage anyone, or babysit anyone. They plug in, have a conversation once a week, and our team runs the work.

We’re running a DARPA seedling on alignment and control, our policy team engages directly with the government on AI alignment, and our work has been featured many times in the Wall Street Journal. We collaborate with researchers at Anthropic, Princeton University, University College London, Redwood Research, and MATS. The work gets published at major ML conferences and workshops.

ABOUT THE ROLE

You will be part of the alignment research team, working on projects selected for their high upside potential and under-resourced status. Research that matters most in a world where AI systems are powerful enough to recursively self-improve with little human oversight.

Projects will evolve as we bring on new collaborators and shift focus to what’s most impactful. What stays constant is that you’re doing real alignment research with real autonomy, in directions most organizations aren’t set up to pursue.

ABOUT YOU

  • Experience with ML research, alignment research, or both
  • You care about AI alignment and believe meaningful progress on the problem is possible
  • Strong Python skills and experience building, training, or evaluating deep learning models (NLP, vision, or LLMs)
  • Experience calling AI model APIs via REST or client libraries
  • You can break complex problems into concrete experiments and execute on them, independently or with a team
  • Eager to use AI tools and automate everything you can
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, startup-like environment
  • Clear communicator in English who can explain technical work to non-technical audiences

BONUS POINTS FOR

  • Self-directed research or data science projects (show us what you’ve built, especially if it increases human agency)
  • Software engineering background and best practices
  • Agile experience (Kanban, Scrum, XP)
  • Experience managing clients and client relationships
  • Experience in startups
  • Being in LA to work from our office

BENEFITS Remote-first with flexible schedules. Health insurance, free lunches at the office, weekly knowledge-sharing talks, and an annual team retreat. Regular performance-based raises and a diversified employee equity program.

COMPENSATION

The salary range is $180k to $240k per year for US-based candidates. Not in the range? Apply anyway. We’re growing fast and may have more senior roles opening soon.

We’re working towards a flourishing future for all conscious beings. If that’s what you want to work on, we want to talk to you.

Strong Demonstrated experience building production‑grade AI agents that perform multi‑step reasoning and tool‑based actions (e.g., tool invocation, planning, memory).

Mandatory: Experience with agent frameworks/orchestration layers or custom agent runtimes (e.g., LangGraph/LangChain, semantic routers, workflow engines, or in‑house frameworks).

Strong practical expertise with LLMs (AWS Bedrock or similar platforms), including evaluation, prompt/program design, and safety patterns.

Strategic problem-solving leadership: You proactively shape ambiguous business questions into well-defined  analytical goals, challenge underlying assumptions, and ensure the work is focused on the problems with the highest impact.

Bar‑setting analytical rigor—applied pragmatically: You anticipate bias, confounders, and risks of misinterpretation early, apply the right level of methodological rigor for the decision at hand, and help others distinguish between “theoretically perfect” and “fit for purpose.”

Efficient, scalable thinking: You balance depth with speed, favor simple and robust solutions over unnecessary complexity, turn one‑off analyses into reusable insights, and help the organization avoid reinventing or over‑engineering solutions.

Track record of translating research into reliable systems in partnership with engineering/product teams.

Proficiency in Python and modern ML/DL libraries; strong AI engineering skills (clean architecture, testing, CI/CD, observability), as well as familiarity with HuggingFace or similar model ecosystems and open‑source tooling.

Experience applying GenAI to DS workflows (LLM‑as‑a‑judge, synthetic data generation, weak labeling, automated eval).

Excellent communication and mentoring skills; fluency in English.

You will have an advantage if you also have:

About Snorkel

At Snorkel, we believe meaningful AI doesn’t start with the model, it starts with the data.

We’re on a mission to help enterprises transform expert knowledge into specialized AI at scale. Excited to help us redefine how AI is built? Apply to be the newest Snorkeler!

ABOUT THE ROLE

We’re looking for a Research Scientist to work on reinforcement learning for training and aligning large language models. This is a foundational research role focused on one of the most consequential open data problems in AI: how to generate the data, reward signals, and training procedures that steer LLM behavior in reliable and generalizable directions — and a core capability that directly differentiates Snorkel’s data-as-a-service offering.

You’ll work closely with Snorkel’s research, engineering, and delivery teams to advance our RL data capabilities — translating research ideas into the preference datasets, reward models, and RL-ready corpora we produce for frontier AI labs, and contributing to a research agenda that is central to Snorkel’s long-term differentiation as a provider of bespoke training data.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Research and implement reinforcement learning techniques — including GRPO, RLHF, RLAIF, DPO, and reward modeling — and translate them into data products (preference datasets, reward signals, verifiable rewards) that customers can use to train and fine-tune large language models.
  • Design and build data pipelines that generate high-quality training signal for RL workflows, including AI-assisted data annotation and curation data pipelines to improve model generalization to unseen benchmarks .
  • Prototype and iterate on end-to-end RL training recipes that inform what data Snorkel ships as part of its data-as-a-service deliveries.
  • Work closely with research scientists, ML engineers, and delivery teams to translate RL research into customer-ready data products.
  • Stay current with the latest developments in large-scale muli-node LLM training, alignment research, and scalable RL methods (on complex environments such as Terminal-Bench), bringing relevant advances into Snorkel’s data-as-a-service approach.
  • Contribute to Snorkel’s research publications and internal knowledge base in RL and model training.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Deep expertise in reinforcement learning from human or AI feedback, reward modeling and credit attribution ideally with a clear perspective on what data makes these techniques work.
  • Experience training or fine-tuning 30B+ large language models at scale, including familiarity with distributed training infrastructure.
  • Strong proficiency in Python and ML frameworks, especially PyTorch and HuggingFace and hands-on experience with RL frameworks such as Verl and SkyRL.
  • Solid software engineering fundamentals — you can build research prototypes that others can run, extend, and integrate into data production workflows.
  • Familiarity with ML infrastructure and cloud platforms and tools (AWS, GCP, Kubernetes, Slurm, etc.); experience with large-scale RL training pipelines a strong plus.
  • Comfort operating in a high-iteration environment with open-ended research questions and shifting, customer-driven technical constraints.
  • Ph.D. in machine learning, reinforcement learning, or a related field strongly preferred; exceptional industry experience considered.

Salary Range

$200,000—$325,000 USD

The AI landscape has gone through incredible changes between 2015, when Snorkel started as a research project in the Stanford AI Lab, to the generative AI breakthroughs of today. But one thing has remained constant: the data you use to build AI is the key to achieving differentiation, high performance, and production-ready systems. We work with some of the world’s largest organizations to empower scientists, engineers, financial experts, product creators, journalists, and more to build custom AI with their data faster than ever before.

Research Policy Analyst Family Policy at Stand Together

Analyzes, researches, and writes policy content on family policy issues including childcare and paid leave to inform organizational advocacy efforts.

Junior Remote Posted 16 days ago RemoteFirstJobs Product
What this role involves

The Koch Associate Program (KAP) is a career accelerator for early to mid-career professionals with a drive to tackle our country’s most pressing challenges in more effective, principled ways. KAP equips associates with the tools, mindsets, and community to succeed as social entrepreneurs—individuals excited to find new and better ways to break barriers and eliminate injustice. Associates spend one day each week engaging in experiential learning with Stand Together Fellowships and work at one of our many partner organizations the rest of the week. Our curriculum is designed to supercharge your development and equip you for long-term success as you seek to have an impact on the problems that prevent people from realizing their potential.

IW’s Policy Analyst (for Family Policy) is responsible for following, analyzing, researching, writing, and speaking on policies related to child care, paid leave, and broader family policy issues for IW. She will produce thoughtful policy content that builds support for flexible, family-centered policy solutions that expand choice and affordability without significant government expansions. She will serve as a resource whenever IW’s family policy efforts or the larger organization need support on issues related to child care, paid leave, and family economic security.

She must be comfortable working to advance IW’s mission and share our core values, be a team player who is happy to say “yes” to any and all tasks, and be knowledgeable about the family policy landscape and broader policy and communications environment. She should be a self-starter who is detail- and results-oriented.

With hard work, IW’s Policy Analyst (Family Policy) could gain invaluable skills, develop subject-matter expertise, grow a network of relationships, and advance into a role that offers even more opportunities to contribute content for IW. Who We Are:

Independent Women® ‘s trusted experts, analysis, and data enable us to drive informed conversations to build support for better policy solutions. We are different, in that we successfully talk to not only the conservative base, but to centrist women independents, and Millennials/Gen Z helping them embrace policies and approaches that improve lives.

IW operates as a virtual office. While we maintain regular working hours, our virtual office means staff spends more time getting things done and less time sitting in traffic. Still, we understand the importance of personal relationships, which is why we remain in constant daily communicatio n and hold regular staff and department calls.

Types of Activities Include:

  • Stay abreast of federal and state policy debates related to child care, paid leave, and family policy, and keep IW leadership informed;
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and identify opportunities to advance IW’s policy approach;
  • Support policy staff with research and drafting of content for IW platforms;
  • Draft policy papers and issue briefs related to family policy;
